Also, you should be aware that just because something transfers off a neg to video well does not remotely mean that it would print well. The ease at which the contrast and color and density can be adjusted on the Rank is incredible compared to the rather limited tools for contact printing. Also the print stock does not have the same contrast range as the Rank does when working with negative. Many newbie DPs that got used to slopping lighting methods (for neg to video work) are shocked to find that their footage is virtually unprintable when they move on to feature film work for the first time and look at their first dailies. This may not apply to super 8 as there is no printing service for negative but should be remembered if you ever are lucky enough to move on to larger formats.

In this weeks UK Amateur Photographer magazine there is an excellent article on b&w processing.
While not being any kind of expert the way I read it is that one needs a balance between sharpness and grain, and that a smaller grain does not naturally equate with a sharper picture. One of the arguments put against negative film is that it has a greater grain than reversal film.
So, it may be possible to get a sharp negative if the developer works that way. This is for b&w, I do not know about colour.
It is the same for contrast, much can be controlled by the developer.

Just adding some links on this topic that I thought might be of interest:
I guess this is basically a PRO forum but it still touches in on some S8 related & interesting stuff on S8 filmstock, cams etc and a lot of filmmaking info in general.
Some feature films shot on reversal: http://www.theasc.com/netforum/opnforum/a.cgi/15--327.1

Gentlemen,
As far as picture quality I know that negative is superior to reversal, but financially, transferring negative is horrible. The lab time for these transfer houses is quite costly. I would love to shoot negative all day, but I wait tables, and its difficult to shoot alot if 4 rolls costs 300+ (processing and transfer included.) Show me a cheap way to transfer negative and I will shot you lovely pictures.
thank you,
tayman strahorn.

Hi, Tayman!
How does $15-$18 per 50 feet sound for negative transfer? See:
